Clinical Experience

Doctor Rosenthal began his clinical experience in 1986 as an undergraduate in Psychology. His first field placement was at the Pierce College Child Development Center in Woodland Hills, California. The program ran for one year concurrently with child psychology and development courses. This experience facilitated an understanding of early childhood issues and the challenges facing young parents.

Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University Long Beach in 1992, Dr. Rosenthal began his relationship with The Center for The Study of Young People in Groups / Teen-Line. This non-profit national resource is affiliated with the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Looking back, the doctor has done countless educational out-reaches into public and private schools, supervised hundreds of teen-listeners on shifts, and served as an expert on various youth issues for university panels.

In 1993 Dr. Rosenthal began earning a Master’s degree in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy from Phillips Graduate Institute. While an Intern at The Center for The Study of Young People in Groups, he began a second internship at The Los Angeles Free Clinic in West Los Angeles. The doctor provided assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for adults, couples, and families. The Los Angeles Free Clinic is a community of caring and committed individuals, made up of staff, volunteers, donors, and community supporters, who have come together to provide health and human services to thousands of men, women, and children in need. The doctor spent a one-year intensive internship program at the clinic, having had an excellent opportunity to work with a diverse population.

Upon completion of his Masters's degree, Dr. Rosenthal began working with an agency in Van Nuys, California called New Directions for Youth. During his 18-month clinical internship, he provided assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for adults, children, adolescents, couples, and families. His duties included gang and juvenile diversion work, counseling domestic abuse perpetrators, anger and stress management education, chemical dependency, and parenting groups. Most of the agency’s clients were mandated to attend Psychotherapy sessions by the Los Angeles courts, the Department of Child and Family Services, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Probation Department, and the Los Angeles Unified School District. Groups were done by Dr. Rosenthal both at the agency and on-site at multiple junior and senior high schools throughout the San Fernando Valley.

Before completing his internship at New Directions for Youth, he went back to school to pursue a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. While developing his practice, he continued his internship for The Study of Young People in Groups. In 1997 an exciting and very challenging Psychological Assistantship with the renowned Clinical Psychologist Howard B. Weithorn, Ph.D. became available. Together they did group and individual psychotherapy with hundreds of chronically mentally ill adults in multiple outpatient psychiatric care facilities. Many of the individuals were recently paroled from prison or had been referred by county agencies. In addition to daily diagnosis, assessment, and treatment, Dr. Rosenthal was responsible for mediating relations between the patients, outside social workers, hospitals, and facility staff. The doctor continued this challenging work for almost five years. Dr. Rosenthal still continues a clinical relationship with Dr. Weithorn today.

Upon defending a Jungian-based theoretical dissertation, he graduated with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Having completed his formal education for now, the doctor felt ready to tackle a new challenge. He believed his education, experience, and training could best be tested and grown in a hospital setting. While continuing to build his practice and volunteer, Dr. Rosenthal began his employment at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in 2000.

The doctor's hospital work began in the inpatient psychiatric unit. Where his previous work had been treating patients to keep them out of a hospital, his work was now helping to get them stable enough to leave a hospital. While working at the hospital, Dr. Rosenthal has been fortunate enough to gain valuable experience and training in almost every unit. His work has taken him to the intensive care units of pediatrics, neonatal, and adult care. He has worked in the emergency room, the adult and adolescent psychiatric units, and the day treatment/partial hospitalization program.

In 2014 Dr. Rosenthal concluded his work at Northridge Hospital Medical Center to focus full-time on his Private Practice. Currently, the Doctor provides Psychotherapy and Consultation out of his Woodland Hills office and by phone or video Telehealth options.
